Christopher Scholes
Invented the first modern and practical typewriter in 1867 with partners, S.W. Soule, and G. Glidden. Christoper Scholes was born near Mooresburg Pennsylvania and died in Milwaukee, which is where he had invented the typewriter. As Christopher was growing up as a young teenager, he prepared with a printer. After he moved to Milwaukee, he worked as a journalist, printer, and editor. Christopher was always was always so interested in the issues of the day, that he eventually served two terms as a Wisconsin senator, another term in the state assembly, and he found the Republican Party in Wisconsin. After awhile President Lincoln asked Christopher to become customs collector for the port of Milwaukee. Christopher signed up for help from investors to sell his typewriter, but marketing tatics were not successful. He eventually sold his rights to the Remington Arms Company who then began manufacturing the Remington typewriter. Christopher then started to make improvements to his invention.

The type-bar system and the universal keyboard was what made the typewriter novelty, but the keys would get jammed easily. A business associate James Densmore had fixed this problem by suggesting to split up the keys for letters commonly used together to slow down typing. This now is known as the "QWERTY" keyboard. He also added a shift key so people could have the option of lowercase or uppercase letters.

There wasn't very much computer indusrty going on through this decade. Three major historical events during the decade
General Robert E. Lee was placed command in the confederate army in 1862. He was left in charge of the defenses of Richmond and defeated the Federal Forces in the Seven days battle.
The Gettysburg battle was fought in 1863 for three days long. This battle was considered one of the bloodiest battles and a turning point of the civil war.
President Lincoln's assassination was in 1865. He was attending the performance "Our American Cousin" at Ford's theater with his wife and two guests. Lincoln was shot while watching this performance.
